Choosing an attachment

Which forestry attachment should I buy first?

Start from the job, not the catalogue. If most of your work is felling repetitive stems, a tree shear. If it is controlled removal near infrastructure, a grapple saw. If the client wants vegetation gone and material can stay, a mulcher. If stumps are the bottleneck, decide between a Dipperfox grinder (process in place) and a Trevi Benne WE cutter (extract). My excavator is in the advertised tonne range. Is the attachment compatible?

Not necessarily. Tonne class is a starting point. Compatibility depends on the lift chart at your working radius with the full attachment package and the material, on continuous auxiliary flow and pressure, on return pressure and case drain, on cooling, on the coupler and on guarding. Ask the supplier for a written compatibility assessment for your exact machine, boom, stick and counterweight.

Should I buy the model with the largest cutting diameter?

Almost never. Maximum diameter is a physical limit under suitable conditions, not a production figure. Size the attachment to the dominant stem size on your sites and handle the rare oversize tree another way. See maximum diameter versus production diameter.

Do European brochure production figures apply in Australian hardwood?

Treat them as an upper bound. Eucalyptus and other dense hardwoods increase cutting force, cycle time, wear and the mass of the cut piece. Ask for a demonstration in representative timber and record your own figures. See Australian hardwood and attachment performance.

Hydraulics and carriers

What hydraulic information does a supplier need from me?

Excavator make, model and year, operating mass, engine power, continuous auxiliary flow, maximum pressure, return pressure, whether a case drain is fitted, number of auxiliary circuits, quick hitch type, boom and stick, and counterweight. The request for quote template lists everything.

What is the difference between pump flow and auxiliary flow?

Pump flow is the total the hydraulic pump can deliver. Auxiliary flow is what the attachment circuit can sustain under load at working temperature, after the machine's own functions and the valve arrangement take their share. Attachments are specified on the second number.

Why does cooling matter so much for mulchers?

Digging has natural pauses; mulching does not. A mulcher can hold the hydraulic system at high power continuously, and in Australian summer that exposes an undersized cooler quickly. See hydraulic cooling and heat.

Can a smaller excavator with strong hydraulics run a bigger attachment?

Hydraulic power is only one constraint. Attachment mass, material mass, boom loading and stability at the working radius usually become the limit first. Check the lift chart before the pump.

Costs and buying

How should I compare two quotations?

Like for like: same configuration (rotation, bracket, hitch, options), same complete attachment mass, same hydraulic schedule, the same inclusions for installation, training and warranty, and wear-part pricing and lead times. Then compare cost per unit of production, not purchase price. See total cost of ownership.

Hire or buy?

Buy when annual hours are high enough that the fixed cost per hour falls below the hire rate and the attachment matches your own carrier's hydraulics. Hire for short projects, trials before purchase, and work outside your normal range. See hire versus buy.

What wear parts should I price before buying?

It depends on the family: blades, pins, bushes and seals for shears; cutting edges for stump cutters; blades and centre screw for Dipperfox; teeth, holders, belts, bearings and liners for mulchers; chain, bar, sprocket and motor for grapple saws; pins, bushes and rotator seals for grapples.
