The hire-or-buy question is usually argued as though it were about capital. It is really about utilisation. A forestry attachment sitting on a stand costs money every day through finance, insurance, depreciation and the yard space it occupies, and none of that stops when the work does. A hired attachment costs nothing between jobs and a great deal during them. Somewhere between those two positions is a number of paid days per year at which the answer flips, and the contractor who knows that number for each attachment family in their fleet makes better decisions than the one arguing from instinct. The dry hire option is the one most often overlooked, and it is frequently the right answer for a short job with a specialised attachment. If you need a large mulcher for a three-week easement job and your own excavator has neither the auxiliary flow nor the cooling for it, hiring a machine that already carries the head removes every compatibility problem at once. The cost per day is higher. The cost of getting it wrong is zero.
Finding your own utilisation threshold
The arithmetic is straightforward once the ownership cost is honest, which means including everything covered in total cost of ownership: finance or the opportunity cost of the capital, insurance, depreciation net of expected resale, scheduled maintenance, the initial spares kit, storage, and the transport and handling the attachment generates in its own right.

Two adjustments make the result far more useful. First, count paid days rather than calendar days on site, because days lost to weather, fire bans, access and breakdowns are not days the attachment earned. Second, add the revenue the attachment lets you win rather than merely the cost it saves. This is the strongest argument for ownership in an attachment-based fleet: an excavator that can shear, grapple, grind and compact stays on a project through more stages, and each of those stages is paid carrier time that a single-purpose machine would have lost. That effect usually dominates the direct comparison.
Then apply judgement to the answer. If your estimate lands close to the threshold, hire. Utilisation forecasts are optimistic more often than they are pessimistic, and the cost of being wrong is asymmetric: an under-utilised owned attachment bleeds quietly for years, whereas an over-hired one merely irritates you for a season and then justifies the purchase with real evidence.
The hidden cost of a mismatch with the hire carrier
The line item that ruins short-term hires is not the rate. It is the assumption that an attachment and a carrier that belong to different owners will simply connect.

Ask specifically who pays if it does not. Then add transport and mobilisation to the comparison, because moving a hired attachment both ways is a real cost that rarely appears in the advertised rate.
Trial before buy as a negotiating position
A short hire is also the strongest negotiating tool available to an attachment buyer, and it is underused. Asking a supplier to arrange a paid hire or demonstration period before purchase, with the hire cost credited against the purchase if you proceed, converts an argument about brochure claims into an argument about measured production on your own site.
