The SC600 is the Dipperfox that most Australian contractors should price first. It puts a 600 mm stump capacity and a 700 mm drilling depth on the 6 to 12 tonne excavators that civil, utility, council and landscaping fleets already run, at about 320 kg and on a hydraulic envelope those machines can normally meet.

Where the SC600 sits in the range

The SC600 is the middle of three models. Below it, the SC400 covers 1.5 to 5 tonne mini excavators at 400 mm and 590 mm depth; above it, the SC850 Pro covers 13 to 30 tonne carriers at 850 mm and 900 mm with 43,000 Nm of torque. The SC600’s 16,900 Nm first-gear torque places it much closer to the SC400 than to the SC850 Pro, which is the honest way to see it: a heavier-duty version of the compact machine rather than a smaller version of the production one. What the published figures mean on site

The 600 mm maximum diameter is the screw’s envelope in one position, and it covers the great majority of stumps on subdivision, easement and farm sites. A 700 mm drilling depth processes the stump and root crown to well below finished grade, which matters where a road formation, a footpath or a planting lane follows. The two-speed planetary transmission is what lets the 16,900 Nm figure be used: as resistance rises through heartwood and root intersections the drive shifts to its torque gear so the screw keeps cutting rather than stalling, and the operator’s job is to keep down-pressure steady rather than to force the pace. Reversible double-sided blades and a replaceable centre screw mean the cutting edges are consumables rather than a rebuild. The 320 kg weight is approximate in the factory material and should be confirmed on the technical sheet, though on an 8 tonne machine it is not a stability concern.

Carrier matching

The 6 to 12 tonne band is a start; the published envelope is 65 to 150 L/min at 150 to 250 bar on a 35 to 74 kW carrier, measured under load rather than read off the pump rating for the reasons set out on the SC400 page. The pattern specific to this model is that many 8 tonne excavators sit around the middle of the band on a single auxiliary circuit and drill well, while a 6 tonne machine that nominally fits often sits at the bottom of it. The cycle is track to the stump, align the screw vertically, drill to depth, move on; there is no crater, no root ball and no truck. Productivity is governed by stump difficulty class rather than diameter, and a 400 mm eucalypt with a stony root crown takes longer than a 550 mm pine in sand. Limitations and when to step up or down a size

Step up to the SC850 Pro when stumps above 600 mm are routine, when the fleet is 13 tonnes plus, or when forestry, highway or rail volumes make torque and depth the whole business case. Step down to the SC400 when access through gates and along paths is the binding constraint and the carrier is a mini excavator. The SC600 is the wrong purchase on a carrier that cannot sustain the lower end of its flow and pressure envelope under load.

On the volumes this model is bought for, the item that catches contractors out is the rock allowance: a stony subdivision can consume blade sets at several times the rate of a sandy one, so carry that allowance in the tender rather than absorbing it.
