Where the HM-100SV2 sits in the range

The HM-100SV2 is the top of the Shearex HM front-mount mulcher range and should not be compared casually with ordinary skid steer forestry heads. It is rated from 250 hp, runs 254 cm of cutting width and a 60 cm optimal target diameter, weighs 2,311 kg and is driven by a high-flow dual-motor system. Below it, the HM-90SV is the 170 hp head with a 40 cm target that most heavy right-of-way contractors will actually run. The HM-100SV2 belongs on high-horsepower dedicated carriers doing industrial land clearing and major infrastructure corridors, and its economics only make sense when the machine is mulching large timber for most of the year.

What the published figures mean on site

The 254 cm cutting width is the widest in the Shearex catalogue, and the 60 cm optimal target diameter is the stem size the rotor processes continuously at a productive rate, not an occasional maximum. Sixty centimetres reaches mature eucalypt and pine, but the arithmetic of wood volume matters more than ever at this scale, since a 60 cm stem holds roughly nine times the wood of a 20 cm stem. A sparse stand of large trees is production work for this head; a dense one may still be cheaper to fell and extract before mulching the residue, as maximum diameter versus production diameter explains.

At 2,311 kg the head is more than double the weight of the entry HM-60 and needs a carrier engineered to carry it on the front through rough ground. Shearex publishes the drive as a high-flow dual-motor system rather than a single L/min range, so the flow requirement must be taken from the factory data sheet for the motor build supplied; this page does not state a figure because none is published in the material available to us.

Carrier matching

At 250 hp minimum the carrier is a purpose-built forestry tractor, and horsepower is only the first filter. The buyer needs the high-flow circuit rating in L/min and bar for both motors, the case drain and return arrangement, the motor displacement the head will be built with, and cooling capacity that will hold oil temperature in 60 cm timber through an Australian summer afternoon. Weight and stability of a 2,311 kg front-mounted head on slopes and soft ground must be assessed with the carrier manufacturer. Because the flow requirement is not published, the usual arithmetic of flow multiplied by pressure divided by 600 has to be run on the carrier’s actual circuit figures rather than an assumed number. As a purely illustrative sense of scale, a circuit supplying 400 L/min at 350 bar would give about 233 kW, or roughly 313 hp of hydraulic power, which is the order of magnitude a 250 hp carrier is working at once losses are counted. Typical work and production considerations

The head fits mining and pipeline corridors, large solar and wind farm site preparation and plantation thinning and re-establishment where whole windrows and large residual stems must be reduced in place. Limitations and when to step up or down a size

This head is limited to ground the carrier can traverse, and a 2.5 metre head on a 250 hp tractor is a wide, heavy load to float, so transport permits and site access should be settled before tendering.
