What this carrier is commercially good at
A skid steer or compact track loader with a forestry head is a production machine for traversable ground. It drives forward into the vegetation with the rotor in front of the operator, so it covers width with every metre of travel rather than sweeping a boom, and on flat or gently rolling country that usually means more hectares per hour than an excavator head of similar power. The carrier is also cheap to move and simple to operate, which is why fuel-reduction programs, property clearing, firebreak maintenance, solar farm vegetation and right-of-way mowing are its natural markets. The bushfire fuel reduction, farm and shelterbelt and solar and wind farm applications lean on this class.
The commercial sweet spot is area work priced by the treated hectare where the client accepts mulch on site and the ground can be driven. What it is bad at
Reach and selectivity. A front-mount head works where the carrier can drive, so drains, batters, creek banks, material below road level, vegetation behind barriers and anything that must be treated selectively around retained trees or infrastructure belong to an excavator. Steep, wet or rocky ground reduces production quickly and increases the ground contact that wears teeth. The head also sits in front of the operator in the debris stream, so guarding and housekeeping matter, and mulching generates dry fines and heat that make fire management a daily discipline in summer. The Shearex HM range
Shearex publishes minimum carrier power, cutting width, optimal target material diameter, weight and continuous flow for every HM model, which lets a buyer match the head to the loader from the data sheet rather than from a brochure photograph. The range starts with the HM-60SR and HM-60DR for carriers from 68 hp: 149 cm of cutting width, a 15 cm optimal target diameter, 1,043 kg (SR) or 1,113 kg (DR) and 87 to 159 L/min of continuous flow. That is the head for the high-flow compact track loaders most contractors already own. The HM-70SR and HM-70DR widen to 190 cm with a 20 cm target diameter from 74 hp, at 1,361 or 1,490 kg and 133 to 204 L/min, and are the right-of-way and solar farm head for larger high-flow loaders.
Above that the range moves onto dedicated carriers. The HM-70SV keeps the 190 cm width but takes a 25 cm target diameter from 125 hp at 1,655 kg and 178 to 288 L/min. The HM-88LV is the hectare-rate head, 220 cm wide with a 25 cm target diameter from 140 hp at 1,760 kg. The HM-90SV is the heavy-vegetation head, 230 cm wide with a 40 cm target diameter from 170 hp at 1,938 kg, and all three run on the same 178 to 288 L/min band. The HM-100SV2 is a different proposition: 254 cm, a 60 cm target diameter, 2,311 kg, a dual-motor high-flow drive and a 250 hp minimum carrier. It is not comparable with ordinary skid-steer forestry heads and belongs on purpose-built machines.
Horsepower and the high-flow circuit
A loader’s engine horsepower is the first filter, and the HM minimums of 68, 74, 125, 140, 170 and 250 hp map the range from compact track loaders to dedicated mulching tractors. But horsepower alone does not prove compatibility. What the head actually consumes is the continuous flow and pressure of the auxiliary circuit, and a loader’s standard circuit will not run any HM head; a high-flow or enhanced high-flow circuit is required, and its rated continuous flow has to sit inside the head’s band. As an illustration, 159 L/min at 240 bar is roughly 64 kW (about 85 hp) of theoretical hydraulic power, which is why a loader at the 68 hp minimum will run the HM-60 but at the bottom of its production, and why the hydraulic power calculator is worth running before ordering.
The other questions are the ones a digging machine never asks. Case drain, the hydraulic motor displacement fitted to suit the carrier’s flow, the return pressure the head will tolerate, and the cooling capacity of a loader whose oil cooler was sized for intermittent bucket work rather than an hour of continuous rotor load in an Australian summer. Weight on the carrier
The head hangs in front of the loader, and 1,043 to 1,938 kg on the lift arms changes everything about how the machine behaves. Rated operating capacity, tipping load, counterweight, tyre or track loading and the ability to lift the head clear of the ground for travel all have to be checked against the exact loader, and a head that is too heavy for the carrier will be slow, unstable on slopes and hard on the lift-arm pins. It also changes the trailer arithmetic: a compact track loader with an HM-70DR on the front is a heavier and longer combination than the loader alone, and the trailer, tow vehicle and licence class all need confirming against the loaded total. Flat-ground production against excavator reach
The decision between a front-mount head and an excavator head is about site geometry more than about the head. On a flat paddock, a solar farm or a fuel-reduction block, a 190 cm HM-70 driving forward will normally out-produce a 107 cm VM-40SL on a 14 tonne excavator that has to sweep and reposition. On a road corridor with drains and batters, a rail reserve behind a barrier or a creek line, the excavator reaches what the loader cannot drive to and treats vegetation selectively while the retained trees stay standing. Fleet-building logic
The economics rest on the loader already being in the fleet for site work and on the head adding a hectare-rate business to it. As an illustration only, assume a high-flow compact track loader costs $85 per hour to own and run and is under-utilised. If an HM-60 adds 400 paid hours a year at an assumed $200 charge-out, that is $80,000 of revenue against $34,000 of running cost, or about $46,000 of contribution, before counting the fuel-reduction and property work that no longer goes to a subcontractor. The catch specific to this carrier is seasonality: fuel-reduction hours cluster into a few months, so 400 hours has to come from more than one market. Step up or step down
Step up from a compact track loader to a dedicated carrier when the HM-70SV, HM-88LV or HM-90SV target diameters and widths are what the contracts need and the loader’s high-flow circuit and cooling have become the limit. Step across to an excavator head, starting with the 5 to 10 tonne and 10 to 16 tonne classes, when reach, selectivity and ground that cannot be driven are the reason the work exists. Stay with the loader when the ground is traversable, the client accepts mulch on site and the contract is priced by the hectare.
Confirm before ordering
- Rated continuous flow and pressure of the loader's high-flow circuit under load, and that it sits inside the HM model's published band.
- Case drain, motor displacement and return-pressure requirements for the exact head and carrier.
- Head weight in the ordered configuration against the loader's rated operating capacity, tipping load and counterweight.
- Hydraulic cooler capacity and acceptable oil temperature for continuous mulching in summer.
