What this class is commercially good at
A 5 to 10 tonne excavator is the smallest carrier that can do serious vegetation work rather than tidy up after it. It runs the mid-range Dipperfox, the compact Shearex mulchers, the larger OMEF pruning heads and, from 8 tonnes, the first Powerhand grapple saw. It also remains a machine that most civil, utility and landscaping businesses already own for trenching, footings and drainage, so the attachment is priced against the idle hours of a carrier that is already financed.
The commercial sweet spot is repetitive medium work on sites where access still matters: council and subdivision stump programs, road reserve regrowth, drains and batters that a front-mount machine cannot reach, orchard and shelterbelt removal, utility corridor maintenance and the compaction and drilling that follows. The council parks, farm and shelterbelt and road corridor applications all lean heavily on this class because it can do three or four paid tasks in a day without a second machine arriving.
What it is bad at
The class still cannot hold heavy timber at reach, and it cannot supply the continuous flow that the larger mulchers, heavy shears and stump cutters need. The Trevi Benne WR shears, the WE stump cutters and the Dipperfox SC850 Pro all start above 11 tonnes, and the Powerhand EX28 family starts at 12. Hectare-rate mulching is also a poor fit; a 70 or 95 cm head on an 8 tonne machine is a reach and access tool, not a production tool, and a buyer priced by the treated hectare on flat ground should read the excavator versus skid steer mulcher comparison before ordering. Continuous high-load work through a summer afternoon also exposes cooling packs that were sized for digging, not for an hour of uninterrupted rotor load.
Attachment families that make sense
Stump removal anchors the class. The Dipperfox SC600 is published for 6 to 12 tonne carriers at approximately 320 kg, with a 600 mm stump capacity, 700 mm drilling depth, 65 to 150 L/min at 150 to 250 bar and 16,900 Nm of first-gear torque. That combination is why the SC600 is usually the model civil and utility contractors mobilise most often: the carrier is transportable, the stump capacity covers most subdivision and corridor stumps, and the two-speed planetary drive keeps the screw turning in hardwood. A 5 tonne machine can still run the SC400 at the top of its 1.5 to 5 tonne band.
Mulching arrives with the Shearex VM-25SK for 5 to 8 tonne carriers (499 kg, 70 cm cutting width, under 13 cm target diameter, 57 to 83 L/min, 50 hp minimum carrier power) and the VM-35SK for 8 to 12 tonne carriers (522 kg, 95 cm width, 15 cm target diameter, 87 to 144 L/min). The VM-35SK is the more commercially interesting of the two because an 8 to 12 tonne excavator still travels economically while carrying a head that treats real regrowth.
Pruning scales up through the OMEF range. The CS300 brings a 300 mm single cut with 360-degree rotation on 6 to 10 tonne machines at 340 kg and 40 to 80 L/min, which is the point where pruning crosses into selective forestry work. The TRI pruning bars (4 to 10 tonnes, 240 to 290 kg, 1.6 to 2.2 m widths, 100 mm capacity, 60 L/min) and the BTD disc trimmers (3 to 10 tonnes, about 150 mm) are the linear-metre tools for road and rail contracts priced by the kilometre.
From 8 tonnes the class gains controlled cutting. The Powerhand EX25 grapple saw is published for 8 to 12 tonne carriers at 651 kg with a 0.25 m² grapple, 900 mm bar and 600 mm maximum cut, and the matching EX25 forestry grapple weighs 400 kg with rotator. The Trevi Benne WL Series covers the class in its mid models, and the CPT425 compactor (5 to 9 tonnes, 430 kg, 30 to 50 L/min at 90 to 130 bar) closes the loop on reinstatement.
Attachment families that do not make sense
Nothing in the WR, WE or SC850 Pro families is published below 11 tonnes, the EX28, EX36 and EX40 grapples and saws begin at 12, 16 and 20 tonnes, and the CS400 pruners begin at 10. A used WT Series shear may be offered for this class because the legacy range was paired from about 5 tonnes, but the smallest WT models carry a 150 mm published maximum and should be valued against their serial-specific build, not the family brochure.
Stability, lift chart and hydraulic realities
Use the chart for the exact machine, boom, counterweight and track width, at the radius you actually cut at.
Assume, purely for illustration, that an 8 tonne machine is rated at 1,200 kg over the side at the radius it works at beside a road. An EX25 grapple saw at 651 kg plus a 60 kg hitch leaves about 490 kg for the piece being cut, and a 600 mm green hardwood section does not have to be long before it exceeds that. This is the class where the difference between saw capacity and safe piece size first becomes a daily planning issue, and the lift chart guide and lift capacity calculator should be used at the real working radius, not the brochure radius.
Flow is the second constraint. The attachments in this class ask for roughly 40 to 150 L/min: 57 to 83 for the VM-25SK, 87 to 144 for the VM-35SK, 65 to 150 for the SC600 and 40 to 80 for the CS300. Many machines in this class quote pump flow that they cannot hold at the coupler under load with the engine pulling the rotor, and continuous flow is what sets mulcher production. Pressure matters too: the SC600 wants 150 to 250 bar and the CS heads 180 to 250, so the auxiliary relief setting rather than the main relief is the figure to confirm. Transport and mobilisation
Most of this class still moves on a tag trailer behind a truck or on a tilt tray, in general terms without the permits and pilot arrangements that a 20 tonne float invites. That is the reason the class earns so much regional and council work. The discipline is in the combination mass: a carrier at the top of the class plus an SC600, a VM-35SK and a grapple saw on stands is a very different load from the excavator alone, and the trailer rating, the truck rating and the driver licence class all need checking against the loaded total. Fleet-building logic
The economics rest on one carrier doing several paid tasks on the same site or the same contract. An 8 tonne machine with a bucket, an SC600, a VM-35SK, a CS300 and a CPT425 can grind the stumps on a subdivision, mulch the regrowth on the batters, prune the retained trees along the boundary and compact the service trench backfill. As an illustration only, assume the carrier costs $120 per hour to own and run and is under-utilised. If the attachments add 300 paid hours a year at an assumed $190 charge-out, that is $57,000 of revenue against $36,000 of running cost, or about $21,000 of contribution, plus the stump and mulching work that no longer goes to a subcontractor. Note that the figure is driven by the added hours, not by the charge-out rate, which is why a head that only suits one contract a year rarely pays. Step up or step down
Step up to the 10 to 16 tonne class when stumps regularly exceed 600 mm, when the severed piece must be held at reach and the EX25 margin is not there, when mulching moves from access work to hectare production, or when root extraction rather than in-place grinding is specified. Step down to the 1.5 to 5 tonne class when access is the reason you win the work and the material is small. Stay in class when the contract mixes stumps, regrowth, pruning and reinstatement on sites that a float cannot reach cheaply; that mix is exactly what this class was bought for.
Confirm before ordering
- Continuous auxiliary flow and pressure available at the coupler under load for the exact carrier, not the pump nameplate.
- Whether a case drain and a second double-acting circuit are needed for the mulcher door, tilt or grapple options quoted.
- Attachment weight in the ordered configuration, plus rotator and hitch, against the over-side lift chart at working radius.
- Hydraulic cooler capacity and acceptable oil temperature for continuous mulching or grinding in summer.
