The OMEF CS200 is where selective pruning starts to involve serious pieces. A 200 mm limb on a mature roadside eucalypt can be several metres long and weigh more than a person, and the CS200 will cut it cleanly with a 210 kg head on a 3.5 to 6 tonne excavator. The tool is straightforward; the planning around it is what buyers need to think about.

Where the CS200 sits in the range

The CS family is OMEF’s individual-cut range, distinct from the continuous TG, BF, TRI and BTD bars and discs. What the published figures mean on site

A 200 mm cut covers most of the limbs a road authority or utility wants removed from a mature tree without taking the tree, and it also covers small whole stems where a selective thin is the brief. The 360 degree rotation is what turns the capacity into useful work: a limb can be cut from the side or underneath at the angle the wood presents rather than the angle the boom happens to be at, and that is the difference between a clean cut and a torn one. At 210 kg the head is light for its capacity because there is no grapple, no second set of jaws and no rotator carrying a load. That is the design intent, and it is why a 3.5 tonne machine can carry it at height. The 180 to 250 bar range delivers the cut force; the 30 to 60 L/min range sets how fast the jaw closes and the head turns.

Carrier matching

The published band is 3.5 to 6 tonnes, and the CS circuit requirement (two double-acting lines, one for the cutting cylinder and one for rotation) is the same across the family and set out on the CS100 page. What is specific here is the flow spread: at 30 L/min the head cuts but cycles slowly, at 60 it turns and closes fast enough to keep a ground crew busy, so a 6 tonne carrier is a materially different tool from a 4 tonne one with the same head on it. Relief pressure still has to reach the 180 to 250 bar window or the top of the cut capacity will not be available on hard wood. Typical work and production considerations

Roadside limb removal, clearance pruning under distribution powerlines, orchard and shelterbelt renovation and medium tree work for councils are the CS200’s natural work. Production is counted in cuts per productive hour, and the honest number includes the ground time. An illustrative cycle: 45 seconds to position, cut and rotate to the next limb gives around 80 cuts an hour, but if each 200 mm limb needs a ground crew to drag it to a chipper, the chipper sets the pace and the machine waits. Limitations and when to choose a different family

The CS200 does not hold the piece, and this is the model where that stops being academic: a 200 mm limb four metres long is a heavy falling object, and length and mass matter far more than diameter when planning where it lands. Where a piece cannot fall safely the tool is a grapple saw that holds and lowers it (grapple saw guide, pruner versus grapple saw comparison); where whole stems need directional control, a tree shear with a grip is better; and where the work is continuous corridor growth a TRI or BTD will outproduce it many times over. Operators should establish exclusion zones and follow applicable WHS procedures and manufacturer instructions.

Options and configuration to settle at quotation

The quotation items are the family’s, listed on the CS100 page. The one to insist on here is the carrier’s programmed flow setting, since a 6 tonne machine left at its default hammer-circuit flow may sit well below the 60 L/min the head can use.

Blade life on dry Australian hardwood is shorter than the European service intervals suggest, and at 200 mm the edge is doing real work on every cut.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 4 tonne carrier enough?

It is inside the published band and will cut, but at the bottom of the 30 to 60 L/min window the jaw closes and the head rotates noticeably more slowly. On volume work the difference between a 4 and a 6 tonne carrier shows up in cuts per hour, not in capacity.

Can it fell small trees?

It will cut stems within its 200 mm capacity, but it does not grip or steer them. For controlled felling use a tree shear or a grapple saw.

Does it suit under-powerline clearance work?

For most distribution-line clearance limbs within 200 mm, yes, and the 360 degree rotation lets the head be presented square to a limb growing back into the conductor zone. Approach distances and permits are matters for the network operator, not the attachment.

How do I price CS200 work?

By cuts per productive hour including ground handling, not by linear metre. On roads, add traffic control and cleanup as separate lines.

Is 200 mm enough for utility clearance work?

For most distribution-line clearance limbs, yes. For large transmission easement trees or heavy roadside limbs, the CS300 and CS400 extend the range.
