What this class is commercially good at
A 10 to 16 tonne excavator is the crossover carrier of Australian vegetation work. It is the smallest machine that can run the heavy end of the published range, because the Trevi Benne WR10 shear, the WE10 stump cutter and the Dipperfox SC850 Pro all enter between 11.5 and 13 tonnes, yet it remains a machine that road, rail and civil contractors already own in numbers and can float between jobs without the cost of moving a 20 tonne excavator. The commercial sweet spot is production clearing on infrastructure and development sites where the carrier will return to earthworks when the clearing stage ends: road and rail corridor felling, subdivision stump removal by extraction or grinding, mulching of real regrowth on batters, heavy limb removal along utility easements, and the trench compaction that follows. The road corridor, subdivision and civil and powerline easement applications are the natural home of this class.
What it is bad at
The class is caught between two economics. It cannot yet hold large hardwood at reach with confidence, because the heavier attachments consume more than a tonne of its over-side lift before any tree is added, and it cannot supply the 159 to 238 L/min the VM-50SR wants or the 130 hp the VM-60SR wants. It is also where the temptation to overbuy is strongest: a 13 tonne machine can physically carry a 986 kg EX28 grapple saw or a 1,190 kg WE10, but whether it can use them at the working radius is a lift-chart question, not a hitch question. Buyers who expect 500 mm hardwood felling as routine production belong in the 16 to 25 tonne class.
Attachment families that make sense
Felling and stump work both step up here. The Trevi Benne WR10 is indicatively matched to 12 to 16 tonne carriers with a nominal 400 mm cutting class, twin Hardox blades that penetrate from both sides and hydraulic rotation options; the WR family as a whole spans 1,250 to 2,225 kg. The top model of the WL Series, published to 21 tonnes with a 450 mm maximum trunk diameter at the family top, is the lighter alternative for regrowth-dominated contracts where an accumulator does more for production than blade size. That 450 mm is a maximum, not a rate to tender on.
For stumps the buyer now has a genuine choice of outcome. The Dipperfox SC850 Pro starts at 13 tonnes: 580 kg, an 850 mm stump capacity, 900 mm drilling depth, 110 to 230 L/min at 180 to 350 bar and 43,000 Nm of first-gear torque, built for corridor and plantation stump counts in the hundreds. The SC600 runs to 12 tonnes for buyers at the bottom of the class. Mulching becomes commercial rather than access-driven with the Shearex VM-40SL for 12 to 15 tonne carriers: 757 kg, 107 cm cutting width, a 20 cm optimal target diameter and 114 to 167 L/min. The VM-35SK covers the 10 to 12 tonne end. Controlled cutting and handling arrive with the Powerhand EX28 grapple saw (12 to 25 tonnes, 986 kg, 0.28 m², 600 mm cut, saw motor and chain-pitch options) and the EX28 forestry grapple at 617 kg with rotator, while the EX25 pair still serves 10 to 12 tonne machines. Heavy pruning comes from the OMEF CS400 and CS400H (10 to 24 tonnes for the CS400, 12 to 24 for the CS400H, 550 to 570 kg, 400 and 420 mm cuts, 50 to 100 L/min at 200 to 250 bar), and the CPT910 compactor (12 to 20 tonnes, 900 kg, 50 to 100 L/min) handles structural backfill. Attachment families that do not make sense
The VM-50SR, VM-60SR and VM-65SV mulchers, the WR15 and WR20 shears, the WE15 stump cutter and the EX36 and EX40 grapples and saws are all published from 15 tonnes or above, most from 16 to 25. A quotation that pairs any of them with a 13 tonne machine is a lift-chart and hydraulics problem before it is a purchase. At the other end, the SC400, the TG and BF trimmers, the CS100 to CS300 pruners and the CPT180 and CPT425 compactors are mini and mid-class tools that will work but waste the carrier.
Stability, lift chart and hydraulic realities
Use the chart for the exact machine, boom, counterweight and track gauge, at the radius you actually work at.
Assume, purely for illustration, that a 14 tonne machine is rated at 2,000 kg over the side at the radius it fells at on a road batter. A WR10 at the bottom of the family span, about 1,250 kg with rotation, plus a 100 kg hitch leaves roughly 650 kg for the tree. A 400 mm green eucalypt stem does not have to be tall to weigh more than that, which is why the nominal 400 mm class is a cutting figure and not a carrying figure. The same arithmetic applies to the WE10, where the load after extraction is a root ball full of soil rather than a stem, and to the EX28 saw, where 986 kg of attachment must be counted before the section. Hydraulically the class spans roughly 100 to 230 L/min: 114 to 167 for the VM-40SL, 110 to 230 for the SC850 Pro, 50 to 100 for the CS400. Pressure now matters as much as flow, with the SC850 Pro published to 350 bar and the VM range to about 410 bar, so the auxiliary circuit relief and the hose and coupler sizing both need confirming against the data sheet. Case drain becomes routine, the VM door needs electrical control for its diverter, and tilt or grapple options on the mulcher call for a second double-acting circuit. Transport and mobilisation
This class sits on the boundary where a tag trailer stops being practical and a float becomes normal. In general terms the carrier alone may travel on a heavy tag trailer behind a suitable truck, but a 14 tonne machine with a WR10, an SC850 Pro and an EX28 grapple on stands is a float load, and the attachment mass, width and stands all count. Plan the attachment package as part of the mobilisation quote rather than as an afterthought, and confirm permits, pilot requirements and route restrictions for the loaded combination with the transport operator. Fleet-building logic
The economics here rest on the carrier returning to earthworks when clearing ends. A 14 tonne machine with a bucket, a WR10, an SC850 Pro, an EX28 grapple and a CPT910 can fell the corridor, stack the stems for the chipper, drill the stumps, backfill the holes and compact the service trenches, then go back to bulk earthworks. As an illustration only, assume the carrier costs $160 per hour to own and run and would otherwise sit through the clearing stage. If the attachments keep it earning 400 paid hours a year at an assumed $260 charge-out, that is $104,000 of revenue against $64,000 of running cost, or about $40,000 of contribution, before counting the felling and stump work that no longer leaves the business. Step up or step down
Step up to the 16 to 25 tonne class when 500 mm hardwood is routine rather than occasional, when the EX36 grapple volume is needed to keep a large chipper fed, when the VM-50SR or VM-60SR is the right mulcher for the vegetation, or when the WE15 jaw is needed for large root systems. Step down to the 5 to 10 tonne class when the work is dominated by 600 mm stumps, 300 mm limbs and access-limited sites. Stay in class when the contract mixes corridor felling, stump treatment and civil reinstatement and the float budget will not stretch to a 20 tonne machine.
Confirm before ordering
- Over-side lift at the real working radius against the attachment, rotator and hitch in the ordered configuration, with the counterweight option stated.
- Continuous auxiliary flow and pressure under load for the exact carrier, and whether the SC850 Pro or VM pressure ceiling is reachable on the auxiliary circuit.
