What this class is commercially good at
A 25 to 40 tonne excavator brings lift, flow and engine power that turn the heaviest attachments in the published range into production tools rather than marginal fits. This is the class for industrial land clearing, major transmission and pipeline right-of-way, large solar and wind farm sites, plantation conversion and high-volume biomass felling, where the timber is big, the stump count is in the thousands and the hectares are measured in hundreds. The mining and pipeline, solar and wind farm and plantation applications are where this class earns its float.
The commercial sweet spot is large hardwood handled at reach with margin. A 30 tonne machine carrying a 2,225 kg WR20 or a 2,240 kg WE15 still has lift left for the stem or root ball, and a VM-65SV on a 30 tonne carrier is one of the few excavator mulchers that can treat 50 cm material as routine rather than exceptional. That margin is what buyers in the 16 to 25 tonne class run out of first.
What it is bad at
Mobilisation, utilisation and catalogue depth. A 30 tonne machine is an expensive float move that suits long stages on big sites and nothing else. Its economics compete directly with dedicated machines: if felling runs to thousands of hours a year, a feller buncher deserves comparison, and if mulching is the whole business, so does a purpose-built carrier, as the feller buncher and skid steer mulcher comparisons discuss. And the published range thins out fast above 30 tonnes: only the Shearex VM-65SV is published to 40 tonnes, the WR family to 35, and the WE15, SC850 Pro and EX40 pair all stop at 28 to 30. A 35 or 40 tonne machine is a mulching carrier in this catalogue and little else, and any other pairing needs a factory compatibility assessment before it is quoted.
Attachment families that make sense
Mulching defines the class. The Shearex VM-65SV is published for 25 to 40 tonne carriers at 1,681 kg with 165 cm of cutting width, a 50 cm optimal target diameter, 193 to 344 L/min of continuous flow and a 170 hp (127 kW) minimum carrier power. It is industrial vegetation-clearing equipment for major right-of-way and rehabilitation work, and the VM-60SR at 20 to 25 tonnes serves buyers at the bottom of the class with a 40 cm target diameter.
Felling and stumps use the top models of the Trevi Benne range. The WR20 is indicatively matched to 23 to 30 tonne carriers with a nominal 550 mm cutting class, twin Hardox blades, 360-degree dual-motor or twin-cylinder rotation options, an optional accumulator, fork tower and steep-slope pedestal; the family span runs to 2,225 kg and 35 tonnes. The WE15 stump cutter is indicatively matched to 20 to 28 tonne carriers at 2,240 kg with a 1,400 mm jaw, built for large hardwood root systems and stump biomass. The Dipperfox SC850 Pro runs to 30 tonnes with its 850 mm capacity and 43,000 Nm of first-gear torque where grinding in place is the specified outcome.
Handling and controlled cutting come from the largest Powerhand models. The EX40 forestry grapple (20 to 30 tonnes, 1,091 kg with rotator, 0.40 m², 2,137 mm opening) is the high-volume chipper and log tool, and the EX40 grapple saw is available only in tiltrotator and tree-care configurations at about 1,180 kg with a 700 mm cut, which makes it the dangerous-tree and large-timber dismantling head rather than a rigid production saw. The EX28 and EX36 grapples and saws run to 25 tonnes for machines at the bottom of the class. An OMEF TRV auger drive covers pole and foundation drilling on the same corridors, but the range is sized model by model on torque, flow and pressure rather than by carrier tonnage, so request the current data sheet for the machine being quoted.
Attachment families that do not make sense
The compactors stop at 20 tonnes with the CPT910, the CS pruners at 24 tonnes, the Terragrip and the EX36 pair at 25, and the rigid EX saws do not extend to the EX40 at all. The entire mini and mid-class catalogue, from the SC400 and SC600 to the WL Series, the VM-25SK through VM-50SR and the TRI and BTD bars, is either outside the band or would waste a carrier that costs this much to run and move. A legacy WT Series WT020 may be offered for this class and needs a serial-specific assessment.
Stability, lift chart and hydraulic realities
Use the chart for the exact machine, boom, counterweight and track gauge, at the radius you actually fell or extract at.
Assume, purely for illustration, that a 30 tonne machine is rated at 5,500 kg over the side at its felling radius. A WR20 at the top of the family span, 2,225 kg with rotation, plus a 200 kg hitch leaves about 3,075 kg for the tree, which is a real margin but still not enough for every tall 550 mm hardwood, and long-reach booms shrink that number quickly. The WE15 adds a soil-laden root ball to 2,240 kg of attachment, and the EX40 tiltrotator saw carries about 1,180 kg before the section. Operators should establish exclusion zones and follow applicable WHS procedures and manufacturer instructions, and no cutting capacity is a suspended-load rating.
Hydraulically the VM-65SV sets the benchmark: 193 to 344 L/min continuous at pressures the VM range publishes to about 410 bar. Run the hydraulic power calculator: 344 L/min at 350 bar is roughly 200 kW of theoretical hydraulic power, which is why the data sheet specifies a 170 hp minimum carrier and why a 25 tonne machine at the bottom of the band should be treated as a compatibility question rather than an assumption. Case drain, electrical door control, and second double-acting circuits for tilt and grapple options are standard requirements, and the SC850 Pro’s 350 bar ceiling should be checked against the auxiliary relief. Transport and mobilisation
Every move in this class is a low-loader move with permits, pilots and route planning, in general terms, and the attachments are heavy enough to matter on their own: a WE15 and a WR20 together weigh more than a small excavator. Whether they ride on the float or on a separate truck with stands, whether the head is transported with the rotation or tiltrotator fitted, and how the attachments are stored between stages are all cost decisions to settle before tendering. Fleet-building logic
At this size the one-carrier logic still works, but it has to be defended against dedicated machines. A 30 tonne machine with a bucket, a WR20, a WE15, an EX40 grapple and a VM-65SV can fell, extract, load and mulch a large corridor and then go to bulk earthworks. As an illustration only, assume the carrier costs $300 per hour to own and run and the alternative is a subcontracted clearing spread. If the attachments keep it earning 600 paid hours a year at an assumed $450 charge-out, that is $270,000 of revenue against $180,000 of running cost, or about $90,000 of contribution. At this size the heads themselves run to several hundred thousand dollars, so 600 hours has to be a floor rather than a good year, which is exactly the point at which a dedicated carrier starts to win. Step up or step down
There is no published step up from here beyond the VM-65SV’s 40 tonne ceiling; above that, the buyer is in purpose-built forestry carrier territory and should compare accordingly. Step down to the 16 to 25 tonne class when the float cost dominates, when sites are scattered, or when the timber rarely exceeds 500 mm and the WR15, VM-60SR and EX36 already do the job. Stay in class when the corridor is long, the hardwood is big and the carrier has bulk earthworks waiting when the clearing stage ends.
Confirm before ordering
- Over-side lift at the real felling or extraction radius against the attachment, rotation or tiltrotator, fork tower and hitch, with counterweight and boom stated.
- Continuous auxiliary flow, pressure and the minimum carrier power the VM-65SV data sheet specifies, confirmed for a 25 tonne carrier if that is what is being paired.
- Case drain, second double-acting circuits and electrical control for door, tilt and grapple options, and the EX40 mounting configuration being quoted.
- Cooler capacity and acceptable oil temperature for continuous mulching in summer, and any additional cooling the distributor recommends.
- Low-loader, permit and route requirements with attachments loaded, or the cost of a separate attachment truck.

Which attachments are published for a 35 tonne excavator?
In the current catalogue only the Shearex VM-65SV (25 to 40 tonnes) and the Trevi Benne WR family span (to 35 tonnes) reach that size. The WE15, SC850 Pro and EX40 grapple and saw stop at 28 to 30 tonnes, so any other pairing needs a factory compatibility assessment.
Can a 25 tonne excavator run the VM-65SV?
It is at the bottom of the published 25 to 40 tonne band. The head needs 193 to 344 L/min of continuous flow and a 170 hp minimum carrier, so the pairing depends on the machine's sustainable flow, power and cooling rather than its tonne class. The VM-60SR at 20 to 25 tonnes is the alternative.
Is the EX40 grapple saw available as a rigid saw?
No. The EX40 is listed only in tiltrotator and tree-care configurations, at about 1,180 kg in tiltrotator form with a 700 mm cut. The rigid range stops at the EX36. Always state the mounting configuration when asking for a quotation.
WR20 or WE15 for large stumps?
They do different jobs. The WR20 fells the standing stem; the WE15 cuts roots, extracts the stump and splits it for transport or biomass. On a big clearing site the usual sequence is shear first, then extract or grind, and the clearing workflow guide sets it out.
Should I compare a dedicated forestry carrier instead?
Yes, when felling or mulching runs to thousands of hours a year.
