What this class is commercially good at
A 1.5 to 5 tonne excavator earns its place in a vegetation fleet through access rather than power. It fits through a residential side gate, tracks across a council reserve without leaving a bog, works beside fences and footpaths, and arrives on a plant trailer rather than a float. For a landscaper, an arborist or a council parks crew the mini excavator is often already on site for footings, drainage or garden work, so an attachment that lets the same machine treat a stump or prune a row of trees is priced against the cost of bringing in a second machine, not against the attachment’s own purchase price.
The commercial sweet spot is work where the material is small and the site is awkward: residential and streetscape stumps, hedges and orchard rows, fine roadside growth, light limb removal, and the backfill and compaction that follows a stump job. That is why the council parks and urban vegetation and farm, shelterbelt and orchard applications lean so heavily on this class.
What it is bad at
The same machine has three hard limits. It cannot hold much at reach, because lift capacity over the side of a mini excavator falls away quickly and the attachment itself consumes a large share of what is left. It cannot supply high continuous flow, so mulchers, large saws and heavy shears are outside its range however they are marketed. And it cannot sustain heavy continuous hydraulic load for hours in summer without oil temperature becoming the limiting factor. If the work regularly involves stems above about 200 mm, stumps above 400 mm or any need to control a severed piece, this is the wrong carrier and the 5 to 10 tonne class is the place to look.
Attachment families that make sense
The published carrier bands put a surprisingly complete kit inside this class. The Dipperfox SC400 is the anchor: 190 kg, a 400 mm stump capacity and 590 mm drilling depth on a 1.5 to 5 tonne carrier, accepting 30 to 130 L/min at 110 to 250 bar with a 12 to 35 kW carrier engine range. Its two-speed planetary drive and 13,700 Nm of first-gear torque are what let a small machine bore through a hardwood stump rather than nibble at it.
On the pruning side OMEF splits the work by vegetation class rather than by carrier. The TG hedge trimmers handle fine growth to about 20 mm on 1.8 to 5 tonne machines. The BF cutter bars weigh only 40 to 46 kg and cut 30 mm material across 1.2 to 1.7 m widths on 20 to 40 L/min. The CS100 and CS200 forestry pruners bring 100 mm and 200 mm single-cut capacity with 360-degree rotation at 120 kg and 210 kg respectively. For reinstatement the CPT180 compactor needs only 12 to 20 L/min at 100 to 120 bar, and an OMEF TRV auger drive turns the carrier into a planting-hole and post-hole machine.
Some families touch this class only at its upper edge. The TRI pruning bars and BTD disc trimmers are published from 4 and 3 tonnes respectively, the Trevi Benne WL Series starts at 2.5 tonnes with a 240 kg smallest model, and the Shearex VM-25SK mulcher begins at 5 tonnes with a 50 hp minimum carrier power. Treat those as 5 tonne propositions, not 2 tonne ones.
Attachment families that do not make sense
Grapple saws and forestry grapples start at 8 tonnes with the Powerhand EX25. The Trevi Benne WR shears and WE stump cutters start above 11 tonnes. The Dipperfox SC600 and SC850 Pro are 6 tonne and 13 tonne propositions. None of these will be quoted for a mini excavator, and a second-hand offer that suggests otherwise is a lift-chart and hydraulics problem before it is a purchase.
Stability, lift chart and hydraulic realities
Use the chart for the exact machine, boom, counterweight and track width, at the radius you actually work at.
Assume, purely for illustration, that a 3.5 tonne machine is rated at 600 kg over the side at the radius you prune at. A CS200 at 210 kg plus a 40 kg hitch leaves 350 kg. The pruner does not hold the branch, so that margin mainly absorbs the shock of the cut, but a WL shear that does hold the stem would consume most of it before any tree is added. Machines with expandable undercarriages should be worked with the tracks extended and set up according to the manufacturer’s instructions; the retracted setting exists to get through the gate. The attachments in this class ask for tens of litres per minute, not hundreds: 12 to 20 for the CPT180, 20 to 45 for the CS100, 30 to 60 for the CS200 and 60 for a TRI bar. The SC400’s 30 to 130 L/min band is wide precisely because it spans 1.5 to 5 tonnes. A carrier at the bottom of that band will drill, but slowly, because the flow available under load, not the pump nameplate, sets production. The 180 to 250 bar the CS heads want should be checked against the auxiliary relief setting rather than the main relief, and the CS pruners need two double-acting lines (one to cut, one to rotate), which many mini excavators do not have fitted from the factory. Transport and mobilisation
Most of this class moves on a plant trailer behind a suitably rated vehicle or on a small tilt tray, in general terms without oversize permits, which is the reason the class exists commercially. The discipline is in the details. The attachment adds to trailer payload, a 190 kg stump drill and a 210 kg pruner both need a stand and strapping points, and the tow vehicle’s rating governs the whole combination. Fleet-building logic
The economics of this class rest on one carrier doing several paid tasks on the same site. A 3.5 tonne machine with a bucket, an SC400, a CS100, a CPT180 and an auger can dig around a stump, grind it, prune the neighbouring trees, drill planting holes and compact the backfill without a second machine arriving. As an illustration only, assume the carrier costs $90 per hour to own and run and is under-utilised. If the attachments add 200 paid hours a year at an assumed $150 charge-out, that is $30,000 of revenue against $18,000 of running cost, so roughly $12,000 a year of contribution towards heads that cost a fraction of the machine. The attachments also change over quickly on a small hitch, which matters more here than on any larger class because jobs are short.
Step up or step down
Step up to the 5 to 10 tonne class when stumps regularly exceed 400 mm, when limbs exceed 200 mm, when the contract needs a mulcher with real width, or when the severed piece must be held, which starts with the EX25 grapple saw at 8 tonnes. Stay in class when access is the reason you win the work; a bigger machine that cannot get to the stump is worth nothing. There is no step down from here. Below 1.5 tonnes the alternatives are hand tools and pedestrian grinders, which is exactly the labour this class is bought to replace.
Confirm before ordering
- Auxiliary flow and pressure available at the coupler under load, not the pump maximum, for the exact carrier model.
- Whether the carrier has two double-acting auxiliary circuits if a CS pruner is being quoted.
- Attachment weight in the ordered configuration, plus hitch, against the over-side lift chart at working radius.
- Trailer and tow vehicle ratings with the excavator, attachments and stands all loaded.

Frequently asked questions
Can a 1.5 tonne excavator run the Dipperfox SC400?
The SC400 is published for 1.5 to 5 tonne carriers with a 30 to 130 L/min flow band. A 1.5 tonne machine at the bottom of that band will operate the grinder, but production follows the flow available under load, so a 3 to 5 tonne carrier will normally be faster on the same stump.
Is there a tree shear for a mini excavator?
The Trevi Benne WL Series is published from 2.5 tonnes with a 240 kg smallest model. On a machine that size the shear consumes most of the over-side lift, so it suits small regrowth and shelterbelt stems rather than anything that has to be carried at reach.
Can I run a mulcher on a 5 tonne excavator?
The Shearex VM-25SK is published for 5 to 8 tonne carriers with a 50 hp minimum carrier power and 57 to 83 L/min continuous flow. A 5 tonne machine is at the very bottom of that band and should be confirmed with the distributor against its actual auxiliary flow and cooling.
Do I need a permit to move a mini excavator with attachments?

What is the most useful first attachment for a mini excavator in vegetation work?
For most landscaping, arborist and council fleets it is the SC400, because stump removal is the task most often sub-contracted or hired in. A CS100 or CS200 pruner is the usual second purchase.
